Dr. Vinod Kumar Sharma

Dr. Sharma is the person who helped give India a formal vocabulary for disaster management. His fight has been to move disaster preparedness from the margins of public policy to its centre. He was instrumental in setting up the National Centre for Disaster Management at the Indian Institute of Public Administration — an initiative that evolved into the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. Now retired from IIPA, where he served as Senior Professor of Disaster Management, he continues to shape the field with the same vigour — as Adjunct Professor at Amrita University, Advisor to the Amrita School of Sustainable Future and Visiting Professor at Kyoto University, Japan. He was a member of the UN ISDR Asia Science and Technology Academic Advisory Group (ASTAAG) and chaired the Sub Group on Capacity Development for the framing of India's National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy 2020.

His contributions have been recognised with the Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar 2022, the nation's highest award in disaster management, and the Paul Appleby Award for Public Administration 2017.

With over 100 research papers and 20 books to his credit, and a career spanning universities in India, the Middle East and the United States, he brings to SEEDS a depth of institutional knowledge and a conviction for community resilience that runs deep.
