Relentless monsoon rains in late August and early September 2024 have wreaked havoc across the Southern States of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, leading to widespread flooding and significant damage. In the North Easten part of India, in Tripura too, people are grappling with a severe flood situation, that is impacting the lives of millions. The situation remains critical, with widespread displacement, destruction of homes, and significant damage to infrastructure. Communities are facing immense challenges, including lack of access to clean water, food, and medical supplies, and heightened vulnerability to waterborne diseases.

Massive landslides have once again hit Kerala’s Wayanad district burying large areas under debris resulting in high fatalities. The most affected areas are Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala and Noolpuzha.

During Dusshera-Diwali festivities let’s support recovery and rehabilitation efforts in North Bengal. The flash floods triggered in the Teesta River have affected both North Sikkim and Darjeeling and Kalimpong areas of north Bengal. SEEDS requests your continued assistance to begin to rebuild homes to ensure the right to dignity and privacy for the affected communities.

Following a cloudburst over the Lhonak Lake in north Sikkim, a flash flood was triggered in the Teesta river, resulting in deaths and missing persons. These flash floods were exacerbated by the release of water from the Chungthang dam, causing a sudden increase in water levels up to 15-20 feet downstream. Several bridges that connect North Sikkim with the remaining part of the State have been severely affected. Sikkim has been cut off from the rest of India due to the severe damage to the NH-10 by the flood.

Martha Bhengra, a 60-year-old widow residing in Tarajuli, Assam’s Lakhimpur, has been severely impacted by devastating floods that have recently struck Northeast. She has been living in a small shanty that got tragically damaged during rains and turned all her inverstment into ruins. The floodwaters surged through her abode, leaving behind a path of destruction and despair. With no one to turn to for immediate support, she finds herself in a desperate situation. Adding on to the situation, her only son lives far away, working in a different town for sustenance. She has no clue on how to rebuild her shattered life all alone.

Jasvanta Ram, a 33-year-old construction labourer who earns a daily wage and his wife Shanti Devi, who is 29 years old, reside in Azad Nagar area of Chohtan in Barmer, Rajasthan. Cyclone Biparjoy's impact has resulted in excessive rainfall and flooding in the area, which gravely damaged their home. The floodwaters reached a height of three to four feets, submerging their modest home. They lost both their cherished residence and the memories it contained. The couple and their four children are left homeless and are facing the difficult challenge in rebuilding their lives. The primary impact of the flood was the devastation of their home and the displacement they endured as a result.
