The incessant rains followed by flash floods in Uttarakhand on 16th and 17thJune,2013 created havoc in the large number of upstream and down stream villages of district Uttarakahsi, Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts. SEEDS Emergency Response team got activated and took the stock of the grave devastation across these districts. The devastation was of large scale and the emerging needs were cited more in terms of shelters and utensils. SEEDS spoke with the local teams of SBMA in Rudraprayag district and decided the deployment of first team to reach these affected districts. The first team was deployed from Delhi on 27thJune, 2013.
The team started assessment on the 12 km stretch between Tilwara and Chandrapuri. The team also went upto Govindghat in Chamoli. The experiences of the mass devastation were almost same and of huge loss – both property and lives. The affected communities were scattered in the safe location; however absolutely unequipped. The continuous rains made their life further miserable. Moreover, in places where camps were established, the women were feeling uncomfortable, as there was lack of privacy.
The initial assessment revealed that there was need of Tents and Utensils.
The tents would help the communities to fight against the advancing winters and live with their own family members together. Though government provided the affected families with dry rations, they did not have utensils to cook food.
To meet these needs , 200 tents and 200 utensils were procured and distributed by SEEDS in the Blocks of Okhimath,Jhakoli and Rudraprayag through local partner SBMA.
SEEDS second mission began with the Technical Assessment from 20thJuly, 2013. Mr. Kamal an architect by profession and Subash; both from SEEDS are part of this mission.
