School safety has been recognized as a critical area of disaster risk reduction and has been implemented in the district of Shimla by SEEDS. The present initiative not only reaches out to a larger number of schools but also involves local community and government institutions.

The entire exercise builds capacity to implement Disaster Management Plans at school, village and block levels and attempts to bridge gap between policy interventions and community practices. With earthquake as primary focus it will also address other natural hazards like landslides. Engineers, masons, teachers, local government officials and village representatives will be trained in disaster risk reduction measures.
