The state of Himachal Pradesh is prone to earthquakes and falls under very high damage risk zone. Several earthquakes in the past have caused severe damage to lives and livelihood.
The recent Kashmir earthquake, 2005 critically highlights the need to reduce disaster risk and focus on preparedness. The earthquake safety initiative aims to sensitize local community and strengthen capacity through training. This will involve training masons on safe construction practices and ensuring safety of children with disability.
Children naturally help to reach out to a larger community and build a culture of disaster safety. The project will demonstrate, how school safety can involve and accelerate community based disaster management processes which can be directly linked to block, district and state level disaster management planning. This will also lead to institutionalize risk reduction and disaster preparedness at school, community and Government levels.
